Here are the basics for cleaning someone's feet:

Materials Needed:

·        Small tub containing a 50/50 mixture of water and alcohol, with nail clippers, nail file, and callus rasp

·        Large tub containing a foot bath (see How to Prepare a Foot Bath handout)

·        One clean bath towel

·        One pair of latex gloves

·        One pair of clean socks

·        One container of mentholated rub

·        One tube of athletes’ foot ointment

  1. Put on Latex gloves and EVALUATE FEET, before the guest begins to soak them in the footbath.  Do they have significant calluses that will require the rotary tool?  Do they have open wounds that may be too painful to expose to the footbath?  Do they have bruises or other trauma to their feet that will dictate how you handle their feet?  Are their feet too damaged for you to work on and should they be told to go to a doctor for care?  Consider these things before continuing with foot care.

  1. Ask the guest to soak his feet for a couple of minutes before you begin.

  1. Place the clean, folded towel over your lap and ask the guest to put one foot on your lap.

  1. Clip nails as needed, remembering to ask the guest if it hurts before you clip.

  1. Use nail file to gently go around the sides of each nail to remove any dead tissue buildup (toe crud, toe jam, whatever), and wipe it on the towel.

  1. Rub the callus rasp on any pain-free calluses to gently take them down.  Begin with the fine/small-holed side and use the course/large-holed side for tougher calluses.  Even if the guest has healthy feet, gently use the callus rasp’s fine side on the sole of their foot.

  1. Repeat steps 2 through 6 on the guest’s other foot.

After the Guest Has Showered (if applicable):

  1. Massage mentholated rub onto tops and bottoms of feet and apply atheletes’ foot ointment between toes.

  1. Offer the guest a pair of new socks, thank them for coming, and ask them to come back.
